Industry: Communications and writing
How would you best describe yourself?
I'm a (sometimes) curly-headed, book-obsessed Word Nerd communications specialist and writer who love, love LOVES working with clever, driven people to shine a carefully crafted spotlight on their amazing work. I’m also unashamedly an Australian Shepherd’s lackey. My business is Blue51 Communications, and I help people tell their story and grow their brand using beautiful communications. For the past two decades, I’ve drafted hundreds of thousands of words for people and I’ve drafted more communications plans and strategies than I could possibly count, and not just because my maths brain is often neglected. I use my love of language and my passion for communications to create messages and tactics that weave creativity with strategy.

How has becoming a parent changed your perception of work and career and what surprised you the most?
Motherhood gave me a ton of perspective and I'm a true believer in the concept of seasonality. There are aspects of motherhood and family life that I wasn't prepared to compromise on and I designed a career that would facilitate that.
What advice would you give your younger self about starting a family?
JFDI! All shall be ok- as Gretchen Rubin said 'the days are long but the years are short' and sometimes I feel that so acutely it's almost painful.
What has been your biggest challenge in motherhood to date? How have you overcome this?
The tumultuous and tempestuousness of new motherhood in particular was something that knocked me for a six- I don't think it is something you can ever be fully prepared for! An ongoing tension is the competing priorities of work, life and family and somehow I'm supposed to fit in me time there too?
What are your strategies to manage the juggle of career and family?
I'm a smidge Type A Control Freak and so I live and die by my planner. If it's not written down, then not only does it not happen, but I'm muttering to myself in the corner trying to remember that 'thing' that I have to do on the 12th of Never.
What do you do for self-care?
Bahaha! JK, I love big walks in nature with my pooch, I'm a sucker for a long hot bath, I love cooking and I'm happiest by the water with a book. I read voraciously which is my soul food. I'm also a huge fan of surrounding myself with people who energise and uplift me- how fabulous is a good laugh and/or cry with a friend?
